Household chemicals fault Algal ponds. How to deal?

The Verkhovna Rada is preparing a program for monitoring the composition of detergents. What are the chances for its successful implementation, as the impact on the ecosystem of Ukraine inflow discharges water with high content of phosphates and the like are going to tackle this problem in the government, said in a television interview UBR chairman of the All-Ukrainian Environmental League Timochko Tatiana. UBR: Domestic producers will switch to production of safe products and no phosphates? TT: Do not have to. UBR: Why? TT: Because domestic production here in the last 5-10 years is simply not there. If 7 years ago Vinnytsia Plant of Household Chemicals on the market of Ukraine has held about 40% of its production, then today it is 1%. Driven entirely by foreign manufacturers, who occupied the market, and if the decision was made now, then we must, first of all, think what may replace those facilities that would meet the needs of the market. UBR: Nevertheless, we have a detergent powders so-called, with phosphates. Is it true that today powders for the CIS and Ukraine, these large producers produce for us with phosphates, but for myself there? TT: The most powerful manufacturers have a few lines. There is a line for his country, there are lines for developed countries, and has a line of another, in some countries - 4, there are different gradations, and the third main group - for the underdeveloped countries to which we belong. Therefore, being in America, we have used these detergents specifically, and our expert panel, which was interested in the composition of detergents produced by well-known American companies, which are sold worldwide, found that a different chemical composition of detergents. UBR: For myself, they do not produce such agents as they are banned? TT: The law is absolutely clear is regulated by the use of phosphate detergents in most developed countries, they are forbidden even with the 70 - th. Different percentages ranged from 10% banned, then 20 - 30% up to a total ban in some countries. UBR: That is, they have already gone the way that we're going to go? TT: And that path is known throughout the world. In Ukraine, this information is deliberately concealed. UBR: What is the threat? What is the impact on the environment, to nature and to human health? TT: This is - an extremely harmful effect, because the municipal sewage, which have the highest content of phosphates, which are found in laundry detergents, falling into natural water bodies, there is a "feeding" of these waters. The accumulation of phosphates leads to the development of algal blooms of these lakes and we are now just one reason we have no flowering of all water bodies due to flowage of water and at the expense of what is happening and do not wash out such large-scale accumulation of phosphates. However, the closed reservoirs - reservoirs, which are the source of drinking water a lot of people, it just pools that bloom. And in the middle reaches of the Dnieper River in the summer we see it bloom, the total flowering. UBR: There is information about how much sewage is discharged, a phosphate content in our waters? TT: You can take the momentum over the past 5 years of discharge of inadequately treated or untreated sewage. Build-up occurs between 3 and 5 billion to nearly 6 billion cubic meters over the past 5 years, and this is only official statistics, which only evaluates official discharges. And the informal, from buildings, which are in the coastal strip, the obliteration of the fields of fertilizers - is not considered here. We see a negative trend. UBR: How can I limit it? TT: This is possible only if the legal regulation on the level of parliament must be enacted, should be developed a position where all these steps are spelled out. Most importantly, our public servants must cease to lobby for the interests of transnational corporations, which flooded the market with their products. UBR: Prior to May 1, BP pledged to develop the program. TT: This is not done. UBR: You say it bothers you? TT: Will it be done. Already prepared the draft is faulty and it can be traced lobbying interests, because they want to push some firms, but in their place, others will follow. And second, as always, to the development of such documents CMU does not attract professionals from various industries, and it should be not only the chemists who know the chemical composition, but also those who work with water facilities, with the natural environment.
